Heat Treat & Temper

Preparing your knife steel

I heat treat my steel in my high temperature heat treating kiln. It allows me to get the absolute best from the steel by allowing me to heat the steel to extremely precise temperatures both for hardening and tempering. I forge using a propane forge.

I also like to create hamons on my blades. A hamon is a differential heat treat line, developed by the Japanese, created using high temperature clay, which gives the edge the hardness to hold a sharp edge and gives the spine a softer state to aid in flexibility of the blade. It can be seen as a soft wavy line along the blade, this also adds to the aesthetics of the blade.
